About Vickie

I am a native of New Mexico living and working as an artist in Scottsdale, Arizona. My passion is creating, encouraging others to create with confidence and to give children the opportunity to see, make and create art.

Mosaic is Going to the Kroc!

After two years and three weeks the six piece mosaic is complete and on it’s way to the new Salvation Army Phoenix South Mountain Kroc Center on a truck!

Transporting large mosaic for installation

Mosaics are tied on to the truck with soft, strong rope.

The children from Rose Linda school make thier tile hands over a year ago, the little houses made by families in South Mountain last summer, tile made by artist friends and neighbors, every Monday since September………

Mosaics are secure and ready to go to the Kroc!

Every room in my house became part of this project.  Long tables filled my living room as we worked around them to assemble and set each mosaic panel.

As the panels were completed I stacked them sideways against the wall in my bedroom.  Nothing like having the faces and uniforms of local celebrities sleep with you every night!

Mosaic Panels are Installed at the Salvation Army Phoenix Kroc Center

It has been a wonderful adventure and learning experience for me.  I have met wonderful people.  The friends I have made in this mosaic  project have been amazing.

I marvel at how many people do want to be involved, the time they have commited and their beautiful work. As a whole community we have created a wonderful memorable piece of art work for the new Salvation Army Phoenix Kroc Center!

Setting tiles on the South Mountain Mosaic
All ages helped set tiles on the Salvation Army Community Mosaic

We had a fabulous three days at the Camelback Studio Tour.  One of the highlights was the overwhelming community response to participate in setting the tiles on the “South Mountain Community” mosaic panel.  This is one of six panels for the new Salvation Army Kroc Phoenix South Mountain Community Center.

Before the Camelback Studio Tour in only two and half weeks I will have these pieces completed and ready…..including grouting.
Be sure and mark your calendar for the Studio Tour March 9, 10 and 11.  It’s free, the neighborhood is great, lots of new art, you can put a tile on the mosaic for the new Salvation Army Kroc South Mountain Community Center.  My home and studio is studio one on the map.  Get your map at www.CamelbackStudioTour.com

Tile Making with Children from Phoenix South Mountain

Artist Vickie Morrow making tiles with children from Phoenix South Mountain

Artist Vickie Morrow works with children of Phoenix South Mountain to make tiles for Community Center mosaic

The new Salvation Army Kroc Community Center Phoenix South Mountain has been under construction for almost two years.  The grand opening is May 18, 2012.     Yikes!  We still have lots of work to do on the mosaic for the new building.

I have been working with the children and families to make tiles for a HUGE mosaic of six - two foot by ten foot panels.  We started by making the tiles with the children from Rose Linda School in the “Old” Salvation Army South Mountain Community Center.

With the severe cuts in arts and programs in the schools none of these children have ever worked or played with clay or made anything with clay.  So in addition to making tiles of their hands they made coil bowls they could take home.

After the glaze firing I had all 65 wonderful bowls in my studio waiting for me to deliver them.  It was a great feel good just to look at the fun and funky shapes, some not holding together very well, others with fancy handles and all of them in wonderful bright colors.

Getting it all together!

This blogging is all new to me.  Please be patient and in a few days I will have all the going ons of my art classes and workshops, where I am showing and selling my work and the progress of my large projects and commissions.
