The new Salvation Army Kroc Community Center Phoenix South Mountain has been under construction for almost two years.  The grand opening is May 18, 2012.     Yikes!  We still have lots of work to do on the mosaic for the new building.

I have been working with the children and families to make tiles for a HUGE mosaic of six – two foot by ten foot panels.  We started by making the tiles with the children from Rose Linda School in the “Old” Salvation Army South Mountain Community Center.

With the severe cuts in arts and programs in the schools none of these children have ever worked or played with clay or made anything with clay.  So in addition to making tiles of their hands they made coil bowls they could take home.

After the glaze firing I had all 65 wonderful bowls in my studio waiting for me to deliver them.  It was a great feel good just to look at the fun and funky shapes, some not holding together very well, others with fancy handles and all of them in wonderful bright colors.
